Barker Animation Gallery in Cheshire was recently recognized by Animation Magazine of one of the ten Most Influential People in the Industry. Herb and Gloria Barker began collecting animation art in 1978 and eventually opened galleries in West Hartford and Cheshire. Their Barker Character, Comics and Cartoon museum was opened in 1997 and features over 10,000 items, some dating back over 125 years. Herb and Gloria also recently donated 50 pieces of their artwork to the MidState Medical Center, including Betty Boop, Popeye and Mickey Mouse. The Barkers have also donated some of their possessions to the Curtis School in Cheshire and plan to donate some also to Briarwood College. After the ceremony at the Hospital, the Barkers, hospital staff and famous animator Myron Waldman visited two third-grade classes at John Barry School. The Barkers are now planning to open the California Raisin and Gumby Museum at their Cheshire facility.
