The University of Connecticut Family Business Center has named Barker Specialty Co. first runner-up among all medium-sized businesses statewide. The 50,000 square foot facility based in Cheshire was nominated from thousands of companies in the state last August. According to statistics from the Uconn School of Business, there are over 70,000 family-owned companies throughout the state. The University of Connecticut Family Business Center is a membership organization sponsored by the Small Business Administration. Barker Specialty has grown since their humble beginnings in Centennial Plaza over 50 years ago! The family began selling promotional items such as pens and coffee mugs and today they offer a variety of personalized merchandise from apparel to cameras, to Waterford Crystal. Often items such as these are a better motivator than cash and people tend to appreciate gifts more, as the gifts serve as a tangible expression of the company's appreciation.
