January 28, 2004

Record-Journal Executive Editor James H. Smith will serve as a juror for the 2004 Pulitzer Prizes in journalism. Pulitzer jurors are invited by the Pulitzer board and Columbia University, the administrator of the prizes. The Pulitzer Prize is generally regarded as journalism's premier award. They are awarded by Columbia on the recommendation from the Pulitzer Board. The Pulitzer juries provide three finalists in each category to the board. There are 14 categories for journalism: public service, breaking news reporting, investigative reporting, explanatory reporting, beat reporting, national reporting, international reporting, feature writing, commentary, criticism, editorial writing, editorial cartooning, breaking news photography and feature photography. The jurors meet at Columbia in New York City in March. The Pulitzer Prizes are announced in April. Smith, 57, has been executive editor of the Record-Journal since 1992.
