Middlesex Community College may move downtown in t ...

October 16, 2003

Middlesex Community College may move downtown in time for the spring semester, Wilfredo Nieves, president of the school, recently announced.

"It helps us be more responsive to the community of Meriden," Nieves said. Except for a few administrative details, the school plans to do that by moving its local satellite campus to take over two floors at 55 W. Main St. in time for the start of classes on Jan. 26. In order to make the move official, the school is still awaiting a memorandum of understanding regarding the lease from the state Department of Administrative Services.

The school currently subleases space from the Meriden Business Learning Center at 500 S. Broad St. More than 600 people take classes there. Moving downtown might encourage more to enroll, Nieves said. "It's much more accessible to people walking from their homes," Nieves said. Mayor Mark D. Benigni and State Senator Thomas Gaffey, agree that it is a plus for downtown. Gaffey and Benigni have lobbied the legislature for months to move the school to the downtown site left vacant when the Department of Social Services vacated it earlier this year.

Benigni has listed the project among his top priorities, because it would both serve residents and bolster economic development efforts. An influx of students could encourage investors to back businesses that cater to them. A downtown school would only extend the city's effort to redevelop downtown through the City Center Initiative.

Middlesex's Meriden branch offers classes, for both credit and for enrichment, geared toward business and industry. Nieves said no changes to the curriculum are planned, at this time. "This is a really exciting time for the school and the area," Nieves said.
