Governor John G. Rowland declared April as Friends ...

April 4, 2001

Governor John G. Rowland declared April as Friends of Library Month in honor of the thousands of volunteers who give of their time and talents to enhance library capabilities and services in Connecticut. In support of the observance - sponsored by Friends of Connecticut Libraries (FOCL) - prolific book illustrator/author Tomie dePaola was named honorary spokesperson. The Friends of Meriden Public Library are very active, according to vice president and membership chair Frank Ridley. The Meriden Friends run a bookstore at 65 West Main Street which offers used books for one dollar or less; they fund special summer programs for children and special music and entertainment performances for adults; they fund the Book for Babes program which sends a book and library card home with each newborn baby delivered at MidState Medical Center; they build library collections everywhere from firehouses to senior residences, and they produce a monthly TV show, "Heartbeat of the City" on Cox Communication Network.
