Meriden Library Honors Author Tomie dePaola
July 31, 2011
On Saturday, July 23, Meriden Public Library held a reception to honor author Tomie dePaola, a former resident of Meriden, and dedicated the Children's Library to him. The Children's Library is now called "The Tomie dePaola Children's Library."Many friends joined library staff Saturday evening to congratulate Tomie for receiving the prestigious 2011 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, which is given by the American Library Association and "honors an author or illustrator whose books, published in the United States, have made, over a period of years, a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children."
The library board and staff wanted to thank Tomie for all he has contributed, not only to children's literature, but to Meriden. Many of his books are based on his childhood adventures here in Meriden and there is a scholarship in his name in the high schools which is given to a student pursuing a degree in visual arts. Tomie will always be a part of Meriden. "Our man forever returns. . . " (from the song "Tomie dePaola" by Bruce Burchsted.)
