October 17, 2005

Meriden Public Library has received a gift of a World War II army blanket with military patches acquired by the late Shirley Fox Cook, Meriden author and army nurse in World War II. The framed blanket, which is a gift from her husband, William A. Cook, will be on permanent exhibit at the library. Mr. Cook noted that his wife carried a pair of surgical shears with her every day of her life in order to be ready in case she located another patch for her collection.

Shirley Fox Cook described her experiences as an army nurse in her book, FROM MERIDEN TO BUCHENWALD. The book, which may be viewed at the library, chronicles her life and reactions to the war, while working in various field hospitals in Europe.

The library is open Monday through Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. For further information, contact the library at 203 630-6349.
