July 18, 2005

Something really exciting is happening at the Meriden Public Library this summer. We are involved in a new program designed to teach math and critical thinking with a fun hands on approach for grades 3-6 at 2:30 pm. on Mondays. Creators Howard Hebert a former superintendent of schools with a extensive background in education and Steve Magna, a technology teacher decided to try a way of presenting math and life >skills visually rather than the traditional paper and pen technique. This program which is sponsored by Shop-Rite is called "the Young Consumers Program" designed to increase test scores and makes children more enthusiastic about learning such concepts as fractions, geometry, and problem solving skills in order to become wise young consumers. The children will be preparing and eventually using their skills in order to become wise young consumers. The children will be preparing and eventually using their skills when they visit Shop-Rite. With the collaboration of parents, children's library staff, educational consultant, and the Drost family, the children will work in pairs spend $100 to purchase groceries for a family of four for an entire week. Calculating items, considering needs, planning long range, and justifying purchases are just a few of the many skills that will be required of each team in order to earn the Young Consumer Recognition Certificate. For more information call the Meriden Public Library Children's Library at (203) 630-6347.
