October 3, 2002

Taz collectibles are the subject of an exhibit at Meriden Public Library now through the end of October. On loan courtesy of Michael Harduby, the display features of variety of items which are part of a collection which Harduby began some twenty years ago.

Harduby began collecting the Tasmanian Devil, one of the most popular Warner Brothers cartoon characters, when the Taz cartoon character was featured with a gray stomach and brown body. Today, the Taz character is featured with a light brown stomach and darker brown body. The Tasmanian Devil was conceived by director Robert McKimson and writer Sid Marcus in 1954 as they were brainstorming to find a new opponent for Bugs Bunny. Taz is an innocent savage who has a big mouth but says very little, an uninhibited brute that is not evil thus the ultimate party animal!

Harduby's collection includes stuffed animals, toys, curtains, air fresheners, spoon rest, lunch box, mugs, key chains, stapler, mug warmer, pencil box, pencil sharpener, comb, pocket watch, picture frame, eyeglass holder and puppet.

The exhibit may be viewed during the library's regular hours, which are: Sunday, 1-5 p.m.; Monday through Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The exhibit is one in a year-long series of special events and exhibits in celebration of the Meriden Public Library's Centennial.
