Businesses: CJR Needs YOU!

January 14, 2014

The Connecticut Junior Republic's (CJR's) FREE Program opened in July of 2013 and provides re-entry support to adolescents and young adults who have been committed to DCF and are returning to their community from an out-of-home placement. The program is a win-win for businesses and the youth! Specifically, CJR is looking for host sites for customer services / phones / administrative staff support; landscaping, and automotive. To participate, or for more information, contact Tamika M. Thurston, B.S., Employment Specialist, Email: tthurston@cjryouth.org or call 860-480-0222.

How Can Businesses Participate in EMPLOY? As a local employer your support is vital. Your participation in EMPLOY will change young lives for the better while providing an opportunity to invest in the next generation of workers. There are several different ways you can help: Offer a paid position; Provide an internship or volunteer opportunity; Be a guest speaker; Provide a tour of your work environment.

What EMPLOY Offers Businesses: Youth who are eager to work and ready to learn; Prescreened employees (job-skill matching); New employee transitional support; Internship or volunteer work at no cost.

About EMPLOY: Employment Motivation Preparation and Learning for Outstanding Youth (EMPLOY) is the vocational component of the CJR FREE Program. It prepares youth for employment by offering them support and opportunities for success. Young people are selected based on their strengths, maturity and motivation. There are three tiers of the EMPLOY model.

Tier One: Participating youth explore and inventory their skills, interests, and passions, strategizing on how to reach their life goals.

Tier Two: Youth learn about basic vocational skills, professional communication, problem-solving and basic computer literacy. They also learn to write resumes, complete employment applications, and prepare themselves for job interviews.

Tier Three: Participating youth apply for employment, secure jobs, and receive employment support. In this tier they put into practice the skills they have learned in Tiers One and Two, and earn the opportunity to receive compensation for their hard work. The EMPLOY program staff provide employee placement support for an initial transition period.
