Meriden Co. Offers Inventive Solutions to Support Those with Alzheimer's

In the United States, there are more than 15 million Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers whose many responsibilities include managing medications, monitoring every-day activities, ensuring home safety, and addressing loneliness and isolation. Registered Nurse and President of Assisted Living Technologies, Inc. (ALT), Ron D'Aquila, has found new solutions to these issues by using wireless technologies.

"Medication compliance is especially important when treating Alzheimer's disease, and even though there currently is no cure for the disease, there are promising medications that can at least slow the progression and ease some of the symptoms of the disease," according to D'Aquila.

Typically, individuals age 65 years and older who are on multiple medications are only 50% to 60% compliant - in large part due to forgetfulness. Alzheimer's patients in mild to moderate stages of the disease can significantly improve compliance with today's technology. Automated Medication Dispensers provide both visual and auditory alert, and can even send a call to the patient as a reminder, as well as notify caregivers if a regimen is not being followed. Assisted Living Technologies has experienced compliance near 95% with clients across Connecticut who use these dispensers.

Another type of technology that is helping patients and their caregivers are Remote Monitoring Systems. Wireless sensors that detect motion, activity from room-to-room, exiting, sleep patterns, and even moisture can help caregiver's know when problems arise so that they can be addressed before they lead to something more serious - such as a fall or wandering.

Assisted Living Technologies, Inc. was established in 2010 and has served several hundred individuals from children with autism to older adults with Alzheimer's. They have a wide variety of primarily wireless, sensor-based technologies such as stovetop fire prevention devices, personal body worn GPS locators, automatic fall detection sensors, video-visit systems and more.

Backed by a staff of specially trained Assistive Technology Specialists, the company works closely with Home Care Agencies, State-funded programs through the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services and Department of Social Services, and the private sector.

Assisted Living Technologies, Inc. encourages caregivers to visit the ALT showroom to view and experience all of the latest devices that can assist with every aspect of caring for an Alzheimer's patient.

"Our number one goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals who wish to remain independent and live safely in their own home," added D'Aquila. Visit the Assisted Living Technologies, Inc. showroom at 74 South Broad Street in Meriden, CT. Showroom hours are Monday-Friday from 8:00am- 4:30pm.
