The agency has now been authorized to provide community action services for Meriden, Wallingford, Southington and Berlin. New Opportunities for Waterbury, Inc., the "caretaker" agency for CAAM, will be contacting Meriden civic leaders and social service providers within the next few weeks, in the agency's attempt to form a Board. Hilda Santiago, president of the Board of Casa Boricua, is waiting to hear when representatives of her agency can meet with CAAM Director David Gilmore and NOW Chief Executive Officer James H. Gatling. Casa Boricua wishes to talk about issues that concern the Hispanic community, since it is estimated to form 17 per cent of Meriden's population. However, according to the 1990 census, the income of 21.98 per cent of the city's Hispanic community's population fell at or below federally designated poverty standard. Ms. Santiago hopes to see greater Hispanic presence in CAAM's upper levels.
