Groundbreaking Held for Senior Community in Mystic

In his opening remarks, Masonicare President & CEO Stephen B. McPherson told the enthusiastic crowd of more than 150, that it had long been a goal of the organization to have a greater presence in the eastern part of the state, where currently Masonicare provides home health and home hospice care. "We plan," he added, "to move the East Lyme office of Masonicare Home Health to this location when it is completed."

Joe Mastronunzio, President of BROM, thanked the various town officials who had provided support and guidance to get to this point, adding "three years may seem like a long time, but as the saying goes, �Good things often take a long time to hatch'." Mr. Mastronunzio also acknowledged the other members of his firm, key executives at Masonicare, the architectural firm of Bessolo Design Group, and Klewin Construction.

First Selectman Ed Haberek noted the many benefits Masonicare at Mystic would bring to town, ranging from "additional revenue, needed services and employment opportunities." Tricia Walsh of the Mystic Chamber of Commerce underscored the economic and community support the project would bring.

Jon-Paul Venoit, Masonicare's Chief Operating Officer, shared details of the planned community which will have 81 independent living apartments, 50 assisted living and 48 dedicated to memory support. The community is projected to be completed in the early fall of 2015. Mr. Venoit also detailed the amenities and services that would be included - many of which are not commonly found in rental arrangements such as this will be. He drew upon Masonicare's experience in serving seniors: "The building will be beautiful, but it's the atmosphere and personal connections that truly make our communities what they are. Our commitment to caring by our largest asset - our staff - is what sets us apart." Mr. Venoit promised listeners that Masonicare would be an involved and supportive member of the greater Mystic community "for many, many years to come."

The ceremonial shoveling was followed by refreshments and hors d'oeuvres catered by McQuade's Market. Masonicare will be opening its sales office in an adjacent building on Clara Drive in late June.
