October 10, 2000

In September 1989, two emergency medical technicians, William Lawton and Carol Gillooly, were killed by a drunk driver. The Hunter's Ambulance Memorial Emergency Medical Technician courses have been offered the past eleven years as a tribute to them. In addition, Hunter's started a scholarship fund in their names for people who want to enter the medical emergency profession. 160 people have benefited from the scholarship, according to Bill McGovern, the quality assurance coordinator and primary instructor for the classes, which began in early October. The class provides intensive training for all types of medical emergencies and includes observation time on full-crew ambulances. At the end of the three-month program, participants take a national registry exam and if they pass become certified emergency medical technicians. Hunter's is one of the agencies that hires people out of the training.
