Hunter's Ambulance has added four new ambulances to its fleet, expanding the number of ambulances to 29. This purchase fulfills the allotment of seven approved last fall by the state Department of Public Health. Corporate facilities manager John Gopoian noted that in order to have this number of ambulances on the road, there needs to be provision made for maintenance. David Lowell, director of operations, said that the newer vehicles are used for front-line response and, quite typically, two or three are periodically undergoing preventative maintenance to assure that they will be in good operating order when needed. The new ambulances are diesel-powered, requiring less maintenance than gasoline-burning engines and are more durable with regular monitoring. Ambulances are located at satellite offices in Berlin, Middletown, New London and Wallingford. The Director of the Division of Health Systems Bureau of Regulatory Services said that the approval of additional ambulances began with a needs assessment submitted to the state's Department of Public Health and, in many such applications, the request can be traced to population growth in a region. The application is accompanied by information on calls during the previous year, and hospitals and nursing homes in the area.
