October 19, 2000

Maria Trella-Drauss, who has replaced retired Executive Director Maureen Bilger, has been a member of the organization for 22 years. She enjoyed many programs at the Club, including ballet, craft classes, and the Junior Leaders teen leadership. For 10 years, Maria worked as the waterfront director at the pool, and in college as an outreach worker. This outreach effort brought the Club to the Meriden Public Schools. Through the Kid Ability program, students were taught safety measures. In 1995, Maria became Program Director. Jack Brooks, Executive Director of the United Way of Meriden & Wallingford, praised the quality of Maria's programs and her contributions to the community. As a result, the United Way has increased funding for the Club. The Centers for Disease Control recently ranked the Girls Inc. P.A.P. program (Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy) among the top five programs in the country. Maria became Assistant Director in 1997 and is pursuing graduate studies in social services business management at Southern Connecticut State University. Maria believes that a life-long involvement in her Club is not unusual, since it is a family organization. She plans to make Girls Inc. more visible in the community.
