Summer camp for children has taken on a whole different meaning when you spend time at the Franciscan Life Center. There, the Land-Based Experiences for Children, as it is called, includes fields, gardens, a little farm, a pond and a set of activities based on the theme of foreign countries. Children learned about China, Italy, Mexico and Japan; and, according to camp coordinator Sister Naomi Zimmerman, elements of the land are incorporated into the activities. As a former Peace Corps volunteer science teacher, Sister Frances Zajac shared her experiences by bringing maps, fabrics, purses, clay items and pictures of her trips to Cameroon. All-in-all, teaching and learning about the world are the most valuable elements at this camp.
