After two years of preparation, the Community Health Center, Inc., has achieved accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. The commission is a national agency whose mission is to improve the quality of care to the public. Although it is common for hospitals to apply for accreditation, it has not been so for health centers. According to Shirley Fryer, site director at the Meriden facility, the Center has applied for this and worked on it for a long time; meeting standards means that everything has to be in place. Precise documentation is necessary. Areas that are looked at include quality of the staff, fire safety and some emergency procedures. The Center must continue to work to maintain accreditation and the facility will be re-evaluated every three years. The accreditation process provides an effective, credible, quality oversight of healthcare organizations.
