Introducing The Community Classroom Collaborative (CCC)

October 14, 2013

The Meriden Public Schools and the Meriden YMCA have partnered and are providing students with intellectual disabilities vocational training in a newly formed transition program called the Community Classroom Collaborative (CCC). It is designed to provide students 18-21 yrs. old with real and meaningful life and work skills within their own communities. Students have the opportunity to work on their individualized goals in a natural community environment. The CCC allows students to learn hands on as well as work with non-disabled peers in inclusive settings and provides students with transitional supports for their future life plans. Collaboration with families, adult service agencies, as well as state agencies is an important feature of the CCC. Functional academics, disability awareness in terms of strengths, needs, preferences and interests are developed and nurtured. We try to match the student's interests with employment. Currently students are working in several areas of the Meriden YMCA, including the weight room, baby sitting room, creation of bulletin boards, landscaping, including plantings, building grounds upkeep, both inside and outside, kitchen work, copy machine and collating mailings. Students have also assisted in setting up for events at the Meriden YMCA Mountain Mist Outdoor Center, as well as the up-keep of the field. In addition, students have had experiences working at Auto World, assisting in mailings for the Meriden Chamber of Commerce, and shredding of documents for local businesses.

If your business would like to provide a working experience for a student with job coach support or if you would like to know more about how to get involved with the CCC, call Deborah Kohan, Transition Coordinator, 203-235-7962 X154.
