Meriden School District at Forefront of Student Success Plans (SSP)

October 1, 2012

Beginning this school year, the State of Connecticut's secondary school reform initiative requires districts to implement Student Success Plans (SSP) for each student starting in grade 6 and continuing through grade 12. The Connecticut State Department of Education defines the SSP as: "an individualized student driven plan that will be developed to address every student's needs and interests to help every student stay connected in school and to achieve postsecondary educational and career goals." The core of SSP is comprised of three components: 1.) Academic Development; 2.) Career Development; 3.) Social, Emotional & Physical Development. With the aforementioned three domains being the focus, the SSP will provide students with support and assistance in setting goals for social, emotional, physical and academic growth while meeting rigorous high school expectations and exploring postsecondary education and career interests. The Meriden School District has been at the forefront with its development and implementation of their Student Success Plans. Students began participating in SSP related activities at the commencement of this school year. Greater Meriden Chamber note: This is an active item on the Chamber's Education Committee agenda. The committee provides school-to-career opportunities for students of all ages, educators and businesses and it promotes business education and training partnerships in the greater Meriden area. The committee meets meets the last Tuesday of the month at 8:30 a.m. at the Greater Meriden Chamber and is chaired by Jim Ieronimo, United Way of Meriden and Wallingford. Any and every chamber member business is welcome to participate in the committee.
