USI of Meriden Recipient of the Meriden Board of Education Community Support Award

December 13, 2011

The Meriden Board of Education recently started a new award given out at Board of Education meetings to recognize our community partners. The Community Support Award strives to recognize those business partners, organizations, and individuals that have demonstrated outstanding support for our schools.

The December 2011 recipients of the Community Support Award are USI of Meriden and Webster Bank of Meriden. Both companies were recognized at the December 6, 2011 Board of Education meeting. Present to accept the award for USI was Gail Feinstei, Vice President of Community Relations. Accepting for Webster Bank was Kim L. Syrop, Vice President, Fraud Mitigation and Loss Management.

This is the third year of Israel Putnam's Mentoring Program. With the help of Meriden's Coordinator of Volunteers, Nan DesPres, Israel Putnam entered into a partnership with USI and Webster Bank to provide mentors for students at Israel Putnam. Currently there are 23 mentors from these two companies who come weekly to visit with students during their lunch and recess time. During this time, students share school happenings, play games, or just talk with their mentors. Our students eagerly look forward to these visits. USI and Webster Bank have been generous in letting their staff come every week. We are fortunate to have several "veteran" mentors who have actively recruited additional adults to serve in this role. We love this program because it brings another group of caring adults into the lives of our students. These adults make a difference every time they walk through the door! We thank Webster Bank and USI for their support of Israel Putnam School.

USI and Webster Bank are just two of the many community partners the school district collaborates with regularly. The Meriden Board of Education looks forward to recognizing other community partners in the coming months.
