October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October 11, 2015

The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) and Connecticut Better Business Bureau want consumers and businesses to know that there are ways to protect themselves from most types of cybercrime, and that they can learn how throughout October, designated National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

"Cyber security is critically important to people, non-profits, businesses and government," according to Consumer Protection Commissioner, Jonathan A. Harris. "So much of our personal information is stored on computers. No one is immune from cybercrime. Although we always must take time to become educated consumers, October is the perfect time to reassess our online safety and determine what we can do differently to better protect you, your family and business in cyberspace."

Connecticut Better Business Bureau Executive Communications Director, Howard Schwartz, says the key to avoiding cybercrime, is understanding how it works.

"Enhancing our online security is no longer an option. It is a necessity for consumers, and an obligation on the part of entities that handle our personal information. As cybercrime evolves and becomes more sophisticated, we have to modify our online habits accordingly. National Cyber Security Awareness Month programs offer tools to do just that."

Now in its fifth year, National Cyber Security Awareness Month involves a coalition of private and public groups in a campaign called Stop. Think. Connect. Its goal is to teach consumers and businesses how to protect themselves, their families and crucial operational information. The event features a different theme for each week of October, as well as number of workshops across the country.

Cybercrime is especially cruel to the elderly, many of whom may not have the experience to spot a scam when they encounter one. Cyber security will become increasingly vital, as individuals, businesses, government and our infrastructure increase their presence and reliance on the internet.

Consumers and businesses will find educational resources at the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (http://www.dhs.gov/national-cyber-security-awareness-month) and Stop. Think. Connect. (http://www.stopthinkconnect.org/) websites.
