This summer's conversion of a garage that used to house the now-discontinued welding instructional program is symbolic of significant changes at all of CT's regional vocational technical schools, including Wilcox. The more than $100,000 in new construction and renovations is for new computer lab classrooms that will serve students studying all of the 14 occupational trades and technologies that the school offers. "We lead the state in the number of computers per student, of all the school districts, and we're very proud of that," said Dominic Spera, superintendent of the 17 school statewide vo-tech system. Enrollment has increased over the year's. This year at Wilcox there are approximately 130 students on a waiting list. Wilcox offers automotive mechanics, building and remodeling, carpentry, machine drafting, electrical, electronics, graphic communications, hairdressing, cosmetology, and barbering, health technology, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, hotel technology, manufacturing technology, microcomputer software technician, plumbing and heating. Richard Cavallaro, Director, is also working on plans to add a new field of study, communications technology to the Wilcox curriculum within the next few years.
