Our success and growth from a firm which had a no clients at start-up to our present size where we continue to grow is due to a variety of factors. As I look back on things, I think the most significant factor is the people who have touched our firm; many only for a short while but with quite an impact and many to this day. I want to take this opportunity to thank a lot of those people.In the fall of 2008, a series of events occurred which presented the opportunity for me to start my own firm. The decision came in 2001, right after September 11, where I lost my job. I decided to enroll in college to purse an accounting degree and, should I ever find myself in the disruptive position to lose my job again, I would place a sign outside my door and start my own business. As I was finishing my MBA, a friend of mine (and also my superior) suggested that I should start my own business as the company for which I was working was being sold. So, not knowing whether I still had a job after the sale, I followed his advice and started my own firm on October 15, 2008.
Sure enough, in April of 2009, I was yet part of another layoff. However, by this time, I had time to work and build the firm to at least a point to where I didn't have to invest additional money for its survival. The few clients I had were enough for the firm to be self-sustained. So the backup plan that started in 2001 fully materialized in 2009.
As the years progressed and we grew, certain clients and friends made great contributions in shaping us into the firm we are now. Those special clients who have been with us from the very beginning or shortly after, seemingly forever, and are truly our friends; Varick Memorial A.M.E.
