The board of the Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden/Gallery 53 voted unanimously to appoint Rita Sarris as the new Director of Gallery 53. Ms. Sarris, a Cheshire resident, has been a long-time volunteer and an administrative aide at the Gallery over the past year. As Director, her duties will include the overall administration of the Gallery; arranging for classes, workshops and demonstrations; coordinating exhibits; supervising volunteers; and otherwise overseeing all artistic and organizational functions of the Gallery, which presents new programs and exhibits monthly at 53 Colony Street, Meriden. Formerly the owner and office manager of Sarris Real Estate in Cheshire, Sarris oversaw every facet of the business. She studied business law, economics, and accounting at Quinnipiac College. She combines her business background with a love of painting. She is currently studying oil painting with Bruce Raven at the Gallery, and has studied pastels with David Cain and Mally Desomma. She is a member of Arts and Crafts Association of Meriden; Cheshire Art League; and the Watertown Art League, for which she has served as treasurer since 2004.
