October 4, 2004

Girls Inc. has begun to outgrow its Lincoln Street location, but it must stay on its site in order to keep the property. The youth service agency got a big boost Monday, however, after the City Council unanimously approved giving it an acre of adjacent unused land.

"I personally think there could not be a better use for this property," City Council Majority Leader Stephen T. Zerio said. "It is a tremendous boost to their opportunity to provide services to Meriden's girls."

Agency volunteers and several girls in the program showed their support at the meeting. The property at 100 Columbia St. has enough room for a 70-space parking lot. Girls Inc. must stay on its existing site as a condition of having received the Victorian-style mansion the agency runs its program from.

"We are landlocked. We have to stay there to continue to work," said Girls Inc. volunteer Kelly Moore, a former agency board member.

The city acquired the land in 1983; it has been unused for years. Councilors agreed giving the land to the agency was best.

"Girls Inc. is totally committed to that site on Lincoln Street. They need to stay where they are or they lose their facility," City Councilor Sandy Maier Schede said.

"I urge my colleagues to support this transfer," Councilor Matthew C. Dominello Sr. said.
