Healthy Aging Month

September is designated as Health Aging Month to inspire practical ideas for adults, ages 45 and older, to improve their physical, mental, social, and financial well-being.

Tips for Healthy Aging

1. Skin care - Protect your body's largest organ by wearing sunscreen and protective clothing when outside, getting yearly skin cancer screenings and staying hydrated.

2. Exercise - Regular exercise significantly lowers your risk of diseases, maintains your mobility, lowers stress, and improves sleep, skin, and bone health. The department of human and health services recommends that adults do 2.5 to 5 hour per week of moderate intensity exercise, 1.25 to 2.5 hours per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise (walking, swimming, dancing, cycling), or a combination of the two. Also recommends muscle strengthening activities involving all major muscle groups two or more days a week.

3. Diet - The the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating fruits, vegetables, lean protein (such as fish and beans), 3 oz of whole grain cereals, breads, rice, or pasta , 3 servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy in milk, yogurt or cheese, and healthy fats each day. Avoid high blood pressure by reducing your daily sodium intake.

4. Mindfulness - Keep your mental health in check by elevating your positive mood mindset by accepting your age, spending time in nature, pursuing new hobbies, and enjoying activities that bring you joy.

5. Sleep - The recommended amount of sleep for adults over the age of 18 is seven to eight hours every night. Doing this has proven to lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, reduce stress and depression, lower the risk of obesity, reduce inflammation, and improve focus and concentration. www.healthline.com

Feast of St. Michael, St. Gabriel & St. Raphael September 29

These three archangels are celebrated for their missions in carrying out their messages from God.

Michael appears in Daniel's vision as "the great prince" who defends Israel against its enemies and in the Book of Revelation leads God's armies to final victory over the forces of evil.

Gabriel makes an appearance in Daniel's visions as well, announcing Michael's role in God's plan. His best-known appearance is his encounter with Mary, who consents to bear the Messiah.

Raphael appears in the Old Testament story of Tobit. There he guides Tobit's son, Tobiah, through a series of adventures which lead to Tobiah's marriage to Sarah, the healing of Tobit's blindness, and the restoration of the family fortune.

Each of the archangels performs a different mission in Scripture: Michael protects; Gabriel announces; Raphael guides and heals.
