Griffin, Licensed Acupuncturist joins the Diversified Physical Therapy Team

September 5, 2011

Susan Griffin Licensed Acupuncturist joins the Diversified Physical Therapy Team!

Acupuncture is a comprehensive science and healing art based on natural laws and principles that have been observed in the Orient for 5,000 years. Today, acupuncture is used by one third of the world as a primary health care system, and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for many conditions. Acupuncture restores the balance of natural energy within a person to promote the body-mind-spirit's ability to heal itself, and thus harmonizes the person's relationship to the world. Treatments take into account the marvelous complexity and unique potential of each person.

Effective for people of all ages, acupuncture is useful as a preventative medicine to correct imbalances before they become more serious diseases, and as a restorative modality in cases of illness or injury. It is also relevant for those who simply sense they are out of balance, or are feeling out of sorts. The ultimate effects of the treatment are a heightened sense of balance and well being.

Many are choosing acupuncture as their first choice of treatment, while others come to acupuncture only after exhausting other forms of treatment first. Some, among the growing number of people who are taking a more active role in maintaining their health, come to acupuncture as part of a preventative care program that emphasizes good nutrition, healthy exercise, adequate rest, and a spiritual practice that feeds the soul. These people use acupuncture to monitor energy levels and to try to resolve patterns of disharmony before they manifest as symptoms of dis-ease.

Qi (life energy) flows through the body in channels called meridians. When the qi in the body is abundant, of good quality, and flowing freely, a person experiences good health. When the qi is weak and obstructed, a person becomes susceptible to disease. The symptoms of disease can manifest not only within the physical body, but also in the mind and spirit.

An Acupuncturist evaluates a person's state of health through a wide range of diagnostic tools, including reading the 12 energy pulses on the wrists to assess the condition of the life energy. Acupuncture points along the meridians are then needled to balance the flow of energy. Energy is brought where it is needed and dispersed from blocked and congested areas. This restores proper balance to the body-mind-spirit's energy, and enhances the system's innate capacity to heal itself. From this point of view, symptoms are distress signals indicating that the system is out of balance.

People come to classic five-element acupuncture with a wide range of specific physical complaints both acute and chronic. Some have problems related to stress, or with troubles that are the effects of mental and emotional conflict in their lives. Acupuncture treats the whole person. Patients frequently report improvement in problems beyond those for which they entered treatment.

Treatment is with sterile, single use, packaged, disposable needles. Acupuncture points will be selected and the needles will be inserted. You may not feel anything when the needle is inserted, or slight pressure, or a tingling sensation. A session usually last 60 minutes but it could be more or less depending on your needs.

Susan Griffin is licensed to practice acupuncture in Connecticut and Vermont, and is certified by the National and Oriental Medicine. (NCCAOM). Susan received her acupuncture training at The Institute of Taoist Education and Acupuncture in Colorado.
