Father and Son Evenings Out

August 5, 2009

Rushford Center continues their Mother-Daughter Program and used it as a model for another, new, free program, Father Son Evenings Out, which is designed to help fathers (or father figures) and their middle school sons develop positive bonds and enhance communication during the critical time of adolescence. Research on father-son relationships suggests that quality relationships are linked to a wide range of outcomes, including emotional well-being, social competence, low levels of psychological distress, and a smooth transition to adulthood by reducing problem behaviors including violence, domestic violence, sexual activity and substance abuse. Adolescence is a difficult stage for boys to go through. Boys who feel good about themselves are more likely to make healthy life choices than those with low self-worth. Rushford recognizes that to be effective, interventions must engage family members on both the cognitive and emotional levels. Adolescent boys face many challenges; statistics reflect the importance of reaching boys at an early age to combat the negative influences of society on the development of positive, affirming social and life skills. The goal of the program is to help fathers and sons develop positive bonds and enhance communication during the critical time of adolescence. In doing so, the communication skills will be more likely to discuss issues/ concerns with their fathers. The program is held in the community one evening a month from 6pm-8pm. Each two-hour session includes dinner for participant and centers around issues that are relevant to adolescent boys and their fathers such as self defense and empowerment, social pressures, drug and alcohol use and making healthy life choices. The 2009 sessions will be held in October and November. For more registration or more information, please contact our prevention department at (203)238-6800 or email at prevention@rushford.org.
