The paper won several writing and design awards at the Annual New England Associated Press News Executives Association journalism competition. Five of the awards were in the category of writing, more than any other newspaper in its circulation category. Dorothy Hall won a first-place award for Local Page design, as did Glenn Richter for column writing. Several reporters and editors shared first place for the paper's continuing coverage of the Martin Luther King holiday controversy in Wallingford. James H. Smith and Glenn Richter also achieved second place awards. Editor and Publisher Eliot C. White expressed pride for his staff being recognized among the best. Lucy and Robert Leach of Plantsville won the grand prize in the paper's Dream Vacation Sweepstakes. The prize was a trip for two to Orlando, Florida, announced Raymond U. Roy, Vice President and Director of Advertising. The contest was conducted along with local merchants, who allowed entrants to deposit coupons at their stores. Mr. Roy commented that over 3,000 entries were received.
