Employees received 20 awards in the annual Connect ...

Employees received 20 awards in the annual Connecticut chapter, Society of Professional Journalists competition, including nine first places. Ted Moynihan won four awards, including first place for his Op-Ed column, "A Labor Issue: Baloney" and for his series on Title IX provisions creating opportunities for women in sports. Bryant Carpenter won first place for his story on the Southington varsity football team. Arts and entertainment writer Amanda Savio received first place honors for her Enjoy cover story on rock lyrics. Features Editor Jeffery Kurz won first place for his article on the painful disease trigeminal neuralgia. Writer Julie Fishman also was awarded first place honors for her investigative article on MidState Medical Center's relationship with developer James McGuire concerning the Cook Avenue building. Photographer Michelle McLoughlin received a top award for her feature photo "Ballerinas in Waiting". Chris French's sports photo "We Have Lift-Off" won top honors. The Record-Journal received more awards than any other paper in its circulation category except for The Day of New London. Other staff members who were honored were Editorial Page Editor Allan Church, City Editor Jacqueline Smith, Reporters Anne Lundregan, Mary Ellen Godin, Eric Cotton, Paul Hughes and John Pettit.
