Record-Journal Executive Editor James H. Smith has ...

October 16, 2003

Record-Journal Executive Editor James H. Smith has been chosen to receive the Yankee Quill Award, which recognizes "effort and dedication of those in New England who have had a broad influence for good in the field of journalism." Smith, 56, is the third Meriden newspaperman to receive the award. Former Record-Journal Publisher Carter H. White was a 1990 recipient, and former Record-Journal Editor Warren F. Gardner was chosen two years later. In supporting Smith's nomination for the award, Editor and Publisher Eliot C. White said, "Jim has made the Record-Journal a better newspaper. He is a good judge of talent and knows how to develop it ... and is a champion for a free press, open government and fighting corruption and government abuse." The award is sponsored by the New England Society of Newspaper Editors and the New England chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. It is the second major award for Smith this year. In April he won a Distinguished Writing Award from the American Society of Newspaper Editors for his columns on journalism, a free press and the First Amendment. Smith has worked for 34 years in newspapers. In 1971, he took his first full-time job as a reporter at The Hartford Courant, where he stayed for 14 years in various editing capacities. He has managed the newsrooms of four other Connecticut newspapers: the Register Citizen in Torrington, The Day, The News-Times in Danbury and, since 1992, the Record-Journal. He led the staffs of the Record-Journal, The Day and the News-Times to New England Newspaper Association Newspaper of the Year awards. He and his wife Jacqueline, an assistant managing editor at the Record-Journal, live in Meriden and have four daughters and two grandsons. The Yankee Quill Awards will be presented a dinner on Oct. 22 in Bedford, Mass.
