Dr. Daube Named Interim President of MxCC

July 18, 2010

Dr. Jonathan M. Daube, President Emeritus of Manchester Community College, has been appointed to serve as interim president of Middlesex Community College, Middletown, Connecticut, following the appointment of Dr. Wilfredo Nieves as the president of Capital Community College in Hartford following the retirement of Dr. Calvin Woodland, Capital's president since 2005.

Dr. Daube, a long time community college educator retired from the presidency of Manchester in 2008 and since that time has taught courses at the University of Massachusetts. He was appointed by Governor Rell to chair the Adult Literacy Board in 2008 and is an external consultant with the Connecticut State Department of Education in East Hartford.

Dr. Daube will begin his interim appointment at Middlesex at the beginning of July to provide leadership to the college while a national search is conducted by the Board of Trustees of the Community College System to find the next president of the college. The Board is expected to authorize a search at its upcoming meeting in June, and the search itself, led by members of the Board and the System Chancellor, will commence in the fall in cooperation with a college search committee comprised of members of the college's faculty, administrative and management staffs, community advocates and foundation leaders.

Dr. Daube who served as president at Manchester for over 20 years until his retirement is known for his academic leadership on the state, national and international levels. Under his guidance Manchester grew to become a key educational and cultural resource in north central Connecticut. His leadership established strong ties and articulation agreements with the University of Connecticut and Eastern Connecticut State University. One of the state's first Middle College High Schools, Great Path Academy, was established on the Manchester campus to serve the needs of several communities in the Manchester region for students seeking an educational experience enriched by a close relationship with the college's programs, facilities, and faculty. He led the initiative, including the development of the Academy's new, technology-rich facility, as Chair of the Academy's Governing Board. Upon his retirement in 2008, Dr. Daube received numerous awards and honors including the State Merit Award for Connecticut from the New England Board of Higher Education, a certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, and the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award from Phi Theta Kappa, the two-year college national honor society.

In making the announcement of Dr. Daube's interim appointment, Chancellor Marc S. Herzog, head of the Connecticut Community College System, expressed his appreciation to Dr. Daube for accepting this new assignment and for his willingness to postpone many of the interesting leadership opportunities that have continued to fill his retirement with activity on behalf of higher education and the state of Connecticut. Chancellor Herzog also thanked Dr. Nieves for his many years of dedicated leadership to Middlesex Community College and for his willingness to undertake a new leadership assignment within the Connecticut Community Colleges at Capital Community College in Hartford.

Dr. Daube will meet the faculty and staff members of Middlesex Community College, supporters of the college, and members of the larger Middletown community on Monday, May 24 at the Training Hill Road campus in Middletown at a welcome reception at 11:30 am in Chapman Hall. Everyone is invited to meet Dr. Daube at that time, to share thoughts about priorities for the college's future and to contribute ideas for the college's next chapter and its transition to new leadership.

Please plan to attend and greet Dr. Daube as he begins his newest professional challenge in Middletown at this informal meeting that will offer an opportunity for dialog with one of Connecticut's best known educational leaders.
