March 27, 2005

A cooperative effort between Middlesex Community College (MxCC) and the Women and Family Center in Meriden and hard work enabled 13 Wallingford and Meriden residents to become Certified Nurse Aides (CNA).

During the graduation ceremony at Augusta Curtis Cultural Center a number of speakers had messages for the graduates. Winifred (Winnie) Standish, the Allied Health Coordinator from MxCC, welcomed everyone to the graduation.

Sean Moore, President of the Meriden Chamber of Commerce and Vice Chairman of the MxCC Foundation Board of Directors, pledged his support in making connections for job seeking. "You have chosen an incredible career path and the Chamber is here to help you," said Moore.

Robyn-Jay Bage, CEO of Women and Family Center encouraged the students to set new goals and reminded them, "You are beginning a new phase in your lives. Knowledge is empowerment. Not everyone can become a health care provider. Compassion and understanding are needed. You are role models and inspiration to others."

The CNA program is approved by the Department of Public Health and can provide the certification required gaining a job as an entry-level CNA professional or it can be a stepping-stone to other allied health careers.

"The strength of this program is the collaboration between MxCC and Women and Family to bring the resources of the college and make them available to the clients of the Women and Family Center. Neither agency would be as effective alone," said Walter Truscinski, Director of Center for Business and Industries Services at MxCC.

The Allied Health Department of MxCC offers the CNA program in the evening at the Middletown, Meriden and Shoreline campuses and in the daytime at the Middletown and Meriden campuses.

There will be an Open House/Health Careers Night, Tuesday, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the MxCC campus in Middletown. Walk-ins are welcome. For more information call (860) 343-5865.
