December 26, 2001

Children First received $25,000 from the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund recently. The fund for the first time awarded discovery grants to 44 municipalities statewide to develop plans for early child care and education. The proposed programs range from parent leadership training to creating a report card on children. The fund's mission is to improve and encourage personal growth and leadership, while focusing on children from birth to eighth grade. Hilda Santiago, chairwoman, said the group plans to link school with the community by establishing neighborhood-based centers. Through activities, members of Children First are trying to determine the needs of he community in conjunction with the Board of Education and the school readiness program. Several Board of Education members support and praise the Initiative for its efforts to get parents involved in their children's education and help surmount language barriers in the city.
