July 10, 2000

Had it not been for Thomas Spratta, the owner of Dee's Antiques in Meriden, Castle Bank and Trust would not be the owners of a Jacobean-style table and chairs that date back to the 1920's. When Victoria and Company bought out the Napier Company last year, they hired Mr. Spratta to appraise furniture and other items inside of the building. In turn, Mr. Spratta contacted one of his regular customers, Dr. Sherwin Borsuk, one of the bank's board of directors, to inform him of the availability of the set. Lawrence McGoldrick, president of Castle Bank, credited Mr. Spratta for his alertness about the table's historic significance in Meriden's industrial past. Mr. McGoldrick considers the table and chairs a part of Meriden's history and is pleased to bring them into his board room, in an effort to preserve what has been good about the community. The table and chairs fit well into the bank's board room, which is furnished with pictures and postcards of the City and photographs of old banks. Allen Weathers, curator of the Meriden Historical Society, who owns Fair Weather Antiques with his wife, plans to research the history of the furniture.
